🦷 Why Dental Health is More Than Just a Fresh Smile: Pet Dentistry Explained

When it comes to keeping our pets healthy, dental care is often overlooked—but it’s just as important as vaccinations or good nutrition. Dental disease is one of the most common health issues in adult dogs and cats, and it can lead to more serious problems if left untreated.

At Seaforth Vets, we see firsthand how dental issues can affect a pet’s quality of life. From bad breath and gum inflammation to tooth loss and even heart or kidney problems, poor oral health can have widespread consequences.

What is dental disease in pets?
Dental disease, also known as periodontal disease, starts with a build-up of plaque and tartar on the teeth. Over time, this leads to inflammation of the gums (gingivitis), infection, and damage to the structures that support the teeth. Pets may struggle to eat, drool more than usual, or develop foul-smelling breath.

How do I know if my pet has dental issues?
Unfortunately, animals are very good at hiding pain. Some signs to watch for include:

  • Bad breath

  • Red or bleeding gums

  • Loose or missing teeth

  • Reluctance to eat or chew toys

  • Pawing at the mouth

However, many pets show no signs at all—another reason why regular vet checks are so important.

What does a dental procedure involve?
At Seaforth Vets, dental procedures are carried out under general anaesthesia to ensure a thorough and pain-free clean. We perform scaling to remove plaque and tartar, polishing to smooth the tooth surface, and full dental x-rays to assess below the gumline. If necessary, diseased teeth are removed to prevent ongoing pain and infection.

Prevention is key
Brushing your pet’s teeth daily is ideal, but we know that’s not always easy! Special dental diets, treats, and toys can help reduce plaque buildup. Most importantly, regular dental check-ups allow us to detect issues early—before your pet is in pain.

Dental care isn’t just about a clean mouth; it’s about keeping your pet happy, healthy, and comfortable for the long term.
